Trip Details

Discover a side of Spain where dramatic coastal cliffs, hidden turquoise coves, and mediaeval stone villages converge.

Based in the beautiful hilltop town of Begur, our Hiking Highlights of Costa Brava tour is a masterclass in Mediterranean walking.

Over six spectacular walking days, we trade the tourist crowds for the legendary Camí de Ronda—an ancient coastal path winding through fragrant pine forests, red-rock sea cliffs, and traditional white-washed fishermen’s bays. But the adventure doesn’t stop at the shoreline. We will venture inland to explore Catalonia’s flawlessly preserved 10th-century medieval hinterland, and ascend the rugged limestone ridges of the Montgrí Massif to stand on the ramparts of a 13th-century mountain castle.

Led by our expert professional guides, this tour seamlessly blends rewarding days on the trail with the absolute best of Catalan hospitality, fresh seafood, and world-class local wines.

Day by Day Itinerary

Hiking Highlights of Mallorca

Day 1 – Arrival and transfer to Begur

Pick up from the airport in Barcelona or Girona (or your accommodation if arriving on earlier days) and transfer to Begur (1 hour 30min).

Arrive in Begur and settle into your beautiful basecamp at Hotel Galena Mas Comangau. Take an evening stroll up to the medieval castle ruins to enjoy the sunset views over the Baix Empordà.

We will have an informal meet-and-greet and introduction to the week before dinner (included).

Day 2 – From Begur to Punta de la Creu, Aiguafreda and Sa Tuna

The iconic silhouette of Begur’s ancient castle, with its distinctive triangular battlements perched on a rocky volcanic cone, serves as our guiding landmark for the day. Walking straight from our hotel doorstep, our guided hike begins by passing the historic mill of Mas d’en Pinc. From here, we venture into a lush holm oak forest, ascending toward the Mirador de la Creu on Puig Rodó. Our guide will point out the spectacular panoramic views stretching from the snow-capped Pyrenees in the north to the formidable fortress of Torroella de Montgrí rising nearby.

Descending toward the coast, our path joins the legendary Camí de Ronda at Cap de la Creu. Walking along these dramatic, undulating cliffside trails before we drop down into the picture-perfect bay of Sa Tuna.

Here, we take time to unwind right on the beachfront, soaking up the Mediterranean sun and celebrating a fantastic first day on the trail with a relaxed coffee or a glass of local Catalan wine.

Day 3 – Begur to Pals, Palau-Sator – Peratallada

We trade the coastal breeze for Catalonia’s flawless medieval hinterland.

Walking directly from Begur, we follow rural footpaths across the plains to the hilltop fortress of Pals. From there, the trail winds past old stone farmhouses and olive groves into the quiet village of Palau-Sator, before finishing in the beautifully preserved, moated stone village of Peratallada—the perfect spot to sample local Catalan tapas.

Day 4 – Catalonia Rugged Coast – Begur to Llanfranc

We head south from our base to tackle one of the most dramatic coastal stretches on the Camí de Ronda.

This walk takes us through fragrant pine woods before descending into the steep, hidden coves of Tamariu and the secluded rocky bay of Cala Pedrosa.

After navigating the undulating cliffside paths, we finish the day on the elegant seafront promenade of Llafranc.

Walk details: 13 km/ 8 miles | approx. 4 hours | ↗ 280 m/ 920 ft | ↘ 480 m/ 1575 ft

Day 5 – The Wild South: Platja de Castell to Calella de Palafrugell

A short transfer south brings us to Platja de Castell, one of the last completely undeveloped, virgin sandy beaches on the Costa Brava.

After exploring a 6th-century BC ancient Iberian settlement on the cliffs, we head north through the protected pine forests of Cap Roig.

We will pass S’Alguer, a picture-perfect cove lined with traditional white fishermen’s shacks, before reaching the iconic arches and white-washed houses of Calella de Palafrugell.

Day 6 – The Mountain Summit: The Montgrí Massif and Castle Loop

For a change of perspective, we head north toward Torroella de Montgrí to conquer the imposing, limestone mountain ridge that stands watch over the region.

Lined with wild rosemary, a rugged stone path leads us up to the 13th-century Montgrí Castle, sitting like a crown on the peak.

From the top of the castle walls, we get a breathtaking 360-degree panorama stretching from the Pyrenees all the way to the Medes Islands.

Walk details: 9.5 km/ 6 miles | approx. 3 hours | ↗ 340 m/1115 ft | ↘ 340 m/1115 ft

Day 7 – The Red Cliffs & Hidden Cove: Sa Riera to Platja de Pals

Our final walk takes us to the northern edge of Begur’s coastline.

Starting from the sweeping bay of Sa Riera, we follow a spectacularly rugged cliff path around the red rocks of Illa Roja—one of the most photographed beaches on the coast.

The trail then opens up onto the golden, endless sands of Platja de Pals, offering views across the water to the Ampurdán wetlands, capping off our week where the mountains truly meet the sea.

This day can be optional, or as an alternative, depending on the weather and dynamics of the group we offer a different walk.
